Book Week 2019 for Aussie Teachers
Well all Aussie Teachers know that Book Week 2019 is almost upon us. Have your decided on your teacher dress up costume?
I loved Book Week when I was in the classroom because I love reading myself and I always love a novelty theme as a way to reignite the spark for our students and reconnect them with reading. The Book Week theme of 2019 “Reading is my Secret Power”has been declared a hit and a big improvement on themes of the past, although they should have just gone and called it “Reading is my Super Power”because this is what nearly every Aussie teacher is calling it.
Students love superheroes. Toss in the popularity of the Marvel Avengers movies and this is a theme kids can engage with. Personally I love the idea of kids thinking of reading as a super power. I mean reading really can do so much for our students.
Reading has the power to transport our students into another place, to expand their vocabulary, to develop their critical thinking skills, the power to infer meaning and read between the lines, the power to connect their own learning. I love seeing students have that light bulb moment when the magic of reading really happens and they feel the power of their own reading skills. I designed these posters with student certificates so that students have something to take home to demonstrate the reading super power they have.
The super power reading badges also let teachers see really easily the super reading strategies that they students feel they have. A quick look around the classroom and teachers can do an informal assessments and think “ok, very few students have expressed confidence with visualising, I am going to need to revisit that strategy”.
But back to the fun part of Book Week 2019 – the dressing up. Currently I am painting canvas shoes to look like dragon talons and sewing organza to make dragon wings for my eldest child. My youngest, going as a Pokemon trainer is much easier to prep for.
Both kids have shared that their teachers are thinking about decorating their classrooms and getting their learning spaces into the theme.
